Part One:
A Photo Album of London sites
important to Charlotte Wimpole
in book 1: Growing Up Victorian
Now known as the Hunter House on Hunter Street,
Charlotte was born in a row house that existed on this site.
It was her home until the age of 17 (1826-43).
The entrance to the burial ground behind the
Wofford Foundling Hospital. Charlotte and her
best friend, Rosena Ivanya, spent many hours here
pondering the mysteries of life.
Heathcote Street. Charlotte's best friend
Rosena Ivanya and her four sisters lived
in housing that once stood here.
Looking down Henrietta Street (now Handel Street)
The burial ground is at the end of the street.
The picture is taken from the corner of Hunter Street
looking East just yards from Charlotte's house.
The main gate of the Wofford Foundling Hospital
still stands today as it did in 1843. It is now
a school for children. Here is where Charlotte
was forced to work with the wild mentally handicapped
12-year-old abandoned girl, Sheridan Breedlove.
The Wofford Foundling Hospital
as it appeared in 1829. In reality
it was just called the Foundling Hospital.
The main gate is behind the observer.
The Wofford Foundling Hospital
as it appeared upon its completion in
the 1700s. People such as Charles Dickens
worked to preserve its integrity in the 1800s.
This is a tree similar to the "Stone Tree"
that Charlotte and Rosena Ivanya sat under to ponder life.
It, like their tree, is located in the burial ground.
St. Mark's Church in Myddelton Square.
This is the Ivanya family's church of choice.
Myddelton Square next to St. Mark's where Charlotte
and the Ivanya sisters entertained to earn money.
